Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

This year is a different kind of Christmas in our household. Different in several ways. We have twoMark-Schultz-Different-Kind-of-Christmas-Cover.jpg kids now, that makes it a lot different in a wonderful way. But, in another way, we’re experiencing our third different kind of Christmas without Kate’s dad who has been a big part of both of our lives.

We’re saddened that Kate’s dad won’t get to meet baby Gus here on earth or see Ryan’s face light up on Christmas morning. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer just after Ryan was born and he died six months later. It was a hard year of emotions for us–wonderful because we welcomed our first son into our family, and so difficult because we said goodbye to one of the pillars of our family.

That first Christmas we really experienced this strange combination of emotions and dealt with trying to enjoy the season with our son while also mourning a grandfather, father, husband and friend. We were unpacking boxes of ornaments, and Kate had tears in her eyes when she said to me, “It’s just a different kind of Christmas this year.” And that’s where this song was born.

We tried to write the lyrics that would reflect the honesty of the emotions we were feeling–that Christmas was still hard, even though we have faith that Kate’s dad is with Jesus. We had no idea how many lives this song would touch, but it only makes sense because there are very few people that haven’t experienced a loss that makes life a lot different. And, there are few times in the year when that difference is felt more powerfully than around the holidays.

There are so many traditions and memories that Kate’s dad has left us, like the Christmas letters we talk about in the song, that remind us of his legacy. And through writing this song, we’ve discovered that mourning is real and okay. But so is celebrating the lives of the ones we miss. We hope these words help you to reflect, grieve and celebrate the ones you love…

Snow is falling Christmas Eve
Lights are coming on up and down the street
Sound of carols fills the air

People rushing home, families everywhere

Are putting candles in the windows
And lights up on the tree
But there’s no laughter in this house, not like there used to be
There’s just a million little memories that remind me you’re not here
It’s just a different kind of Christmas this year

In the evening fires glow
Dancing underneath the mistletoe
A letter left from Santa Claus
won’t be the same this year, in this house because

There’s one less place set at the table
One less gift under the tree
And a brand new ache to take their place inside of me
I’m unwrapping all these memories, fighting back the tears
It’s just a different kind of Christmas this year

Now there’s voices in the driveway
Families right outside the door
And we’ll try to make this Christmas like the one’s we’ve had before
As we gather round the table
I see joy on every face
And I realize what’s still alive is the legacy you made

It’s time to put the candles in the windows
And lights up on the tree
Its time to fill this house with laughter like it used to be
Just because you’re up in heaven, doesn’t mean you’re not near
It’s just a different kind of Christmas

It’s just a different kind of Christmas this year

God Bless,
Mark
