My name is Liz and I have been a shamless Mark Schultz fan since “I Am the Way”. His God-given talent and ability has always inspired me, but none the way “He Will Carry Me” did in 2008. Once of my favorite songs since it was released, it became my anthem for a long period of time when God decided to bench me with a series of life altering events.
>I have always desired to be a mother and each passing year and each passing Mother’s Day I remained childless until I was 35, God blessed me with my first baby girl. I was married, had my own business, and now I was to be a mother! While I was carrying Gemma, we found out she had a severe heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. The lower left chamber of her heart was not growing along with the rest of her heart. As long as she was in me she would be fine, it was the moment she was born, she would have to be given medication to keep her alive and then open heart surgery a few days after birth. The night before her surgery, I begged the NICU nurse to let me hold her. I had not held her since her birth and she could possibly die the next day. She removed all the wires and things attached to her and I held my little gem. Gemma sailed through her surgery and recovered faster than the Dr.’s had expected and she was sent home within 3 weeks. It was the happiest time of my life! Well God had other plans for Gemma and He took her home just 5 1/2 weeks after she was born. She suffered cardiac arrest and went to be with Jesus. Life as I knew it changed forever. This broke up my marriage, lost my business and life in Maine ended. Mark’s song “He Will Carry Me” took on new life for me and it gave me comfort. We even played it at Gemma’s funeral. “Even though I ‘m walking through the valley of the shadow. I will hold tight to the hand of him whose love will comfort me…”.
>The next period of time was the hardest ever, but with prayer and good friends and music, I made it through. I am now remarried to the most wonderful man and I am a stay at home mommy to my son Robbie who will be one next month and our next son is due the end of July! God is good and a I thank Mark for using his talents to serve the Lord!
